My Country and My People
(Hardcover)
by Yutang Lin
ISBN: 9971642050
Format: Hardcover
Pub. Date: January 1, 1938
Publisher: Halcyon House
This book is now out of print but shouldn't be! Beautifully written, and fully indexed; the best editions were printed in the mid 1930's. (The 1937 edition of this book can be downloaded from our Download section).
This book made headlines in America when it came out in the 1930's. For perhaps the first time a Chinese wrote a book in English about China and the Chinese, and the sympathetic reaction of many Americans to China's plight in the struggle against Japan made this book a bestseller. Pearl Buck, the first American woman to win the Nobel Literature Prize, was the one who persuaded Lin to write this book. Her faith in him is fully justified. Few indeed were native sons of China who were immersed in both Chinese and Western cultures. And Lin was one.

These 100 interviews of ordinary Chinese citizens provide unusual glimpses into everyday life in the People's Republic. "The Cyclist" rides across town to work in all kinds of weather because the buses are overcrowded. Liu, a salesman in a Xinhua bookstore, discusses salaries, duties and personal matters. (When asked about women, he says, "I want a girl of good character with a clean political record and good-natured.") One of the most interesting interviews is of Li Xiaohang, who tells what it's like playing volleyball for the state and painting in her spare time for her own pleasure. All in all, these accounts are rich in detail. Unfortunately, the questions asked of the subjects are never given, so many interviews have the distracting feel of one-sided conversations. Nonetheless this is a must for those interested in contemporary Chinese life.

This book consists of 70-odd short interviews with Chinese people in every walk of life. The pieces, which created a sensation when serialized in China in 1985, present their life stories and attitudes much more realistically than most Chinese reportage or fiction. Part of the original's charm lay in its ear for jargon and idioms from different regions of China, an element lost in this British-supervised translation

From the Publisher
During the late imperial era (1500-1911), China, though divided by ethnic, linguistic, and regional differences at least as great as those prevailing in Europe, enjoyed a remarkable solidarity. What held Chinese society together for so many centuries? Some scholars have pointed to the institutional control over the written word as instrumental in promoting cultural homogenization; others, the manipulation of the performing arts. This volume, comprised of essays by both anthropologists and historians, furthers this important discussion by examining the role of death rituals in the unification of Chinese culture.

As befits a society of culture and sophistication, the ancient Chinese gave a lot of thought to the matter of sex. But contrary to the images of depravity that characterize many Westerners' ideas of Chinese sexual habits, people in ancient China viewed sex as healthy and normal and approached all aspects of it with an unreserved, joyful acceptance. Van Gulik bases his study on ancient Chinese texts and schools of thought. Introductory chapters cover 1500 B.C.-22 B.C., ranging over religion, customs, and culture, and discussing ideas contained in the I-Ching, as well as from Taoism and Confucianism.

Excerpt - page 126: "... guanxixue. In the art of guanxi three things are exchanged: gifts, banquets, and favors. ..."
Everyone who has lived in China knows something about guanxi, the uses of personal connections to get things done, and they will know that it is a slightly shady subject about which there are no instruction manuals so one has to pick up knowledge about it in the way one once learned about sex. Now Mayfair Mei-hui Yang has combined her learning experiences as a student in Beijing and in numerous research trips to give us a wonderfully detailed account of the complex and fascinating workings of guanxi and of guanxixue, that is guanxi-ology or the art/science of guanxi.

"Twenty years ago, a French friend told us that during his travel in China he was keen on traditional Chinese culture but found it difficult to understand. He suggested that we write a book on Chinese culture.
In 1994, the English edition of Things Chinese was published. It soon became a hit with our readers, and that was why the book was reprinted twice. However, occupied by work, we did not have time to come up with revised edition of the book."

Edition Description: 1st ed
This book is a good start at covering Chinese slang, but it only scratches the surface. Granted, it covers some of the more outrageous samples, and broaches some "forbidden" topics that you'll never get your Chinese teacher to talk about. Chinese is at once one of the most formal languages in the world, and one of the coarsest. This book is a comprehensive discussion of all the terms, jokes, puns, and vocabulary in Chinese that you wouldn't want to say in front of your grandmother. Fair warning, don't use the cuss words unless you also know how to apologize for them / kill a man with your bare hands.
